One of the most difficult stains on the mattress to remove is certainly that of children’s pee. Without a doubt, at least once in his life, every person has found himself having to remedy this inconvenience which does not consist only in the halo that forms on the mattress, but also in the bad smell that could emanate for several days, if you do not intervene quickly and with suitable techniques and products.
The first solution to prevent the baby from wetting the mattress is to put a mattress cover that has a plastic bottom part so that the pee does not get on the mattress. In case this is not enough or you have forgotten to put it on, cleaning the mattress from the pee will be very simple.
Immediately try to dry the mattress as much as possible with absorbent paper.
For actual cleaning, the most effective solution is to use ammonia, preferably perfumed, pouring it directly onto a soft, damp cloth and then rubbing the wet part of the mattress. Alternatively, just pour the ammonia into a bottle with a spray dispenser and spray it directly on the stain and then rub it with a damp cloth anyway.
Once the mattress has been thoroughly cleaned with ammonia, you will need to blot the area with another dry cloth and let the mattress dry for most of the day with the window open, if you do not have the opportunity to put it in the sun. If it is a rainy or particularly humid day that risks not allowing the mattress to dry, it can be dried directly with the hairdryer.
As an alternative to ammonia, you can also use a solution of water and bicarbonate to be poured on a sponge to then be able to rub the mattress. Behind this operation, it must always be dried as yet defined. In addition to cleaning, baking soda is also an excellent disinfectant. Another good alternative to ammonia or baking soda is hydrogen peroxide.
A cotton swab of hydrogen peroxide should be soaked and put to act for a few minutes on the stained part of the mattress, then it should always be rubbed with a cloth moistened with hot water and dried outdoors or with the help of a hairdryer.
To always use natural products, you can also opt for a mixture of vinegar and lemon, diluted in a little cold water and always proceeding with the aid of a soft cloth to rub and dry well.
If the stain persists or you get the impression that the smell of pee has not gone away completely, you can use special products that are on the market.
You can also pour a few drops of washing machine detergent on the pee stain, scrub with a brush, leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse with a cloth moistened with warm water.
If you are not comfortable with the first therapy, you can replicate the procedure several times.
Whichever way you decide to clean the mattress from the baby’s pee, before putting the sheets back on, it is advisable to vacuum the entire surface of the mattress so that dust and mites that can cause allergic reactions are avoided. The steam vacuum cleaner guarantees a deeper and more effective cleaning.
